OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

The Occupational Therapy Department at PSRD has made significant strides in clinical care, training, and academic collaboration over the past year. Through the successful implementation of new programs, workshops, and partnerships, the department continues to advance in the field of occupational therapy and improve patient care.

Clinical Care

* Therapeutic Sessions: The Occupational Therapy Department conducted over 1,873 therapeutic sessions, achieving many notable success stories. These sessions played a crucial role in improving patient outcomes and quality of life.
* Department Upgrades: The department has been upgraded with new equipment specifically for pediatric and hand therapy. Additionally, the use of advanced assessment tools such as the Cerebral Palsy Quality of Life (CPQL) assessment and the Short Sensory Profile to enhance diagnostic accuracy and treatment effectiveness has been initiated.

Training And Workshops

* Quality Management in Healthcare Facilities
* Role of Occupational Therapy in Rehabilitation
* Collaborated with Pakistan Kidney & Liver Institute.
* Splint Making Workshop focused on practical skills and techniques in splint fabrication.
* The Autism Spectrum Disorder Symposium was held in recognition of “World Autism Month” to raise community awareness, discuss recent research, and highlight the importance of early occupational therapy interventions.

Academic Collaborations

  • Clinical Rotations: Collaborated with the Occupational Therapy departments of Mayo Hospital and CMH Lahore to initiate clinical rotations for students from PSRD College of Rehabilitation Sciences. This partnership provided hands-on experience, exposure to various clinical situations, and networking opportunities.
  • Career Counseling Session: The department worked with the principal of Ziauddin College of Occupational Therapy to conduct a career counseling session for OT students, offering guidance and career development opportunities.
  • Summer Internship Program: Launched the “Summer Internship Program,” allowing OT students from various universities to gain hands-on clinical experience and enhance their expertise in occupational therapy.

Speech Therapy

The Speech Therapy Department plays a crucial role in helping individuals with speech impediments. By employing a range of techniques and tools, they provide personalized care tailored to each person’s needs.

The following activities enabled the therapists to provide even better services:

* Conference focused on Otology, Hearing Implants, and Lateral Skull Base Surgery conducted to improve skills
* Organized a meaningful visit to Mayo Hospital to develop a sensory room facility for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder
* Facilitated a visit to Evercare Hospital for the establishment of speech equipment
* Celebrated World Speech Therapy Day
* Organised and moderated a symposium on Autism Awareness
* Coordinated a workshop on Quality Control in Health Care Facilities

SUCCESS STORY

Barira Usman, a two and a half year old, has shown significant progress in the Speech Therapy Department following her treatment for hearing impairment. Barira had difficulties with sound detection, affecting her ability to engage with her environment and communicate.

Through tailored speech therapy interventions, including auditory training and language exercises, she received focused support to enhance her auditory skills. Barira has progressed from sound detection to the identification of words. This is a significant milestone, as it demonstrates her improved ability to recognize and understand language.
